Critters in Attic? Helpful Tips for Prevention
By michael sexton
This time of year with the weather change can cause more noticeable activity of critters in your home. I have been in the industry over 20 years and have seen so much preventable damage from these animals. Raccoons, squirrels, rodents, mice and others cause terrible damage to Ac/Heating equipment and wiring. They also leave behind disgusting stuff too like feces and urine and bacteria which can cause air borne diseases.
I always recommend consulting a professional but, there are some preventative measures you can do before these uninvited guest choose your home or business. On a preventative measure here are some things to look for understand that little creatures like rats and mice do not need much of an opening to make their way in as little as 1/8 of an inch. Make sure you use caulking or some sort of sealant to seal these openings around area where pipes or wiring, cable are entering the structure.
Pay close attention to gaps around chimneys, vent pipes and garage door corners. I have noticed a lot of openings at the pitch changes where the roof transitions. I recommend the high most safety practices when venturing on the roof and always have someone with you, this can be very dangerous especially if the roof is high pitched. You can wire mesh or copper wool to close openings till you find a handy man or carpenter to repair major openings. Cut any tree limbs to about 2-3 foot away from structure. Do not store carpet in attic which is very inviting to nesting type creatures.
If you have signs of an active infesting please consult a pest professional to asses and identify the animal and trapping and removal procedures. Trying to do this your own can be very frustrating and can cause more damage and money than using a professional. I hope tips are helpful.
